Biography

This soldier passed through Peterborough East Station and signed the visitors’ book on 15 February 1917.  He obviously had a sense of humour as he wrote a witty poem, upside down and signed himself as “A. Gay. Gordon”.

“When this this Book you turn & look
And on this page you frown
Think of the boy who spoiled your Book
By writing upside Down”

We believe he may have been referring to the Scottish country dance rather than his name.  However, as the ‘Gay Gordons’ also alludes to a Scottish Regiment it is possible that this soldier was serving with the Gordon Highlanders.
