Biography

Private A G Childs of the Machine Gun Corps recorded that he made two visits to the tea room at Peterborough East station, in February 1916 and again in July 1917.  We have been unable to positively identify this soldier but believe he could be either Private Arthur George Childs, 122080, who was killed in action on 11 April 1918, or Private Alfred George Childs, 26197 who survived and was discharged at the end of the war on 13 February 1919.

The Machine Gun Corps (MGC) were based nearby at Belton House, Grantham and many MGC soldiers passed through the East Station.  Around this time the Heavy Section of the MGC had established a training camp at Elvedon near Thetford for Tank training, another reason for MGC personnel using this rail route.

Unfortunately we cannot find any signatures for a positive match.  Can you help identify this soldier?  Please get in touch if you can tell us more.
