Biography

Albert James Simpson was born in Earls Barton, Northamptonshire on 15 January 1897, to parents Alfred, a storekeeper working for the Co-operative Society, and Annie Rebecca (nee Callender).  In both the 1901 and 1911 census the family were living at High Street, Earls Barton, Northamptonshire.  Albert had three siblings who in 1911 were Florence Annie (17) pupil teacher, Marguerite Alice (16) general store assistant and Arthur Callender (12).

Albert attested to join the Royal Flying Corps on 19 August 1916, aged 19 years seven months.  Albert was with 58 Squadron RFC when he passed through Peterborough East Station on 12 March 1917  and wrote in the visitors’ book “PER ARDUA AD ASTRA Many thanks for welcome received”.  This was just a couple of months before he left for France on 1 June 1917. In October 1917, Albert was admitted to the London General Hospital with a shrapnel wound.   Albert joined the Royal Air Force as an Airman 3rd class on 1 April 1918 and was promoted to Airman 1st class on 1 July that year.  He was hospitalised several times suffering from disordered action of the heart.  He served until 19 February 1919 and was awarded the British War and Allied Victory medals.

According the 30 June 1922 edition of the Northampton Mercury, Albert was awarded a BA degree from Liverpool University.

Albert James married Louisa Alice Burman on 14 May 1932, in the Parish Church at South Farnborough, Southampton.  Albert’s address on the marriage certificate was 42 Hook Rise, Tolworth, Surrey.  No children have been traced.

In 1939, Albert’s wife, Louisa A Simpson was living at 1 Doddington Road, Wellingborough with Albert’s parents, Alfred and Annie, and his two sisters, Florence and Marguerite.  However, there is no record of Albert.

We have found a 1939, record for an Albert J, with the correct birth date, living at 36 Sycamore Grove, Rugby and working as an electric arc welder.  We also have a death for Albert J in Rugby in 1983, aged 86 years.  Is this the right Albert J Simpson?
