Biography

Lance Corporal Arthur William Aldous passed through Peterborough East Station on 8 July 1916.  He wrote a short rhyme in the visitors’ book which shows a sense of humour in difficult times.

“Better late than never, is a comforting refrain.  Save when we reach the Station, too late to catch the train.”

We know that he was serving with the 4th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers and was based at Mullingar Barracks in Ireland.  His medal index card indicates that he served with the Royal Irish Regiment and was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals, which means he would have served overseas.

We have not been able to find out anything more about this soldier.  Can you help?
