Biography
Driver B Morris of 33 Battery, Royal Field Artillery was based at Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow when he signed the visitors’ book at Peterborough East Station on 21 September 1916. His service records have not been located but research has identified a Bertie Reginald Morris born in Ixworth Thorpe, Suffolk. We cannot prove this is the correct man but believe it could be. If so, his parents were Walter, a carter for a wine merchant and Frances (nee Batrum) and he was one of ten children. In 1911, Bertie was working as a groom (domestic).
Bertie was awarded the British War and Allied Victory medals.
In 1924, Bertie married Hilda Simpkin at Stow, Suffolk and they had a daughter Lilian born in Oundle in 1925. In 1939, Bertie is a farm foreman at High Lays Lodge, Sibson, Norman Cross, Huntingdonshire where he is living with his wife and daughter. Bertie passed away in December 1982 aged 88, he was living at 14 Park Road, Sawtry, near Huntingdon, Cambs.
