Biography
Clifford Rush was born in Norwich on 29 March 1899, the youngest son of Henry James Campling and Hannah nee Rush. Henry was a paper hanger and decorator. On the 1901 and 1911 Census the family were living at 80 Heath Road, Norwich, Clifford had a sister Lilian and brother Sidney.
Clifford joined the Royal Navy on 29 March 1917, his 18th birthday. He signed on for 12 years. During his service Able Seaman Campling served as a Telegraphist on HMS Marlborough. However he had a free discharge from the Royal Navy on 31 August 1920, short of his 12 year commitment.
Clifford passed through Peterborough East Station on 10 April 1917 and wrote in the visitors’ book “Please accept my great thanks and hearty good wishes for your great kindness and hospitality”. He was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals.
Clifford married Elsie Pendleton in Norwich in 1920 but no children have been traced.
In 1939 Clifford and Elsie were living at 29 Charles Avenue, Audenshaw, Lancs. Clifford is a railway tele clerk. Clifford died in Cleveland, Yorkshire in 1975.
His brother Sidney served in the Norfolk Regiment.
