Biography

Unfortunately, despite Private E Smethurst leaving both his regiment and service number, he remains untraced.  He passed through Peterborough East Station and signed the visitors’ book on 21 November 1916.  His entry reveals that he was serving with the 2/4 Battalion Kings Shropshire Light Infantry who were based in Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth in 1916.  The battalion had been formed in Shrewsbury in 1914 and it maybe that Private Smethurst was from this area.
