Eric enlisted in to the Royal Field Artillery on 22 August 1914, at the age of 19.  He served with the 7th Reserve Battery and attained the rank of Acting Bombardier.  From 5 July 1915 he served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, most likely in Gallipolli.  In November 1915, he received a shrapnel wound to his right foot and was taken to 54 Casualty Clearing Station Sulva, Gallipoli and on 26 November 1915 was admitted to 2nd Birmingham Hospital, Northfield.  There are a number of postings listed in Eric’s service records during 1916, but they have proved difficult to interpret.  On 9 March 1917, Eric transferred to the Royal Flying Corps as Class 3 Air Mechanic and was promoted to Class 2 Air Mechanic in August that year.  On 1 April 1918, he transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force as Air Mechanic 3, appointed Air Mechanic 2 the following month and Air mechanic 1 in October 1918.  In December 1918, he passed the technical exam for rank of Corporal.  He served in Egypt from 29 August 1917 to 19 March 1919.  Eric transferred to the RAF Reserve on 6 May 1919.  He was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals and the 1914/15 Star.

Eric married Gladys M Jeffries in 1919 at Norwich, Norfolk.  They had two children, Joan (1918) and Cyril (1921).  In 1939, the family are living at 1 Brackenbury Gardens, Hammersmith.  Eric is employed as charge-hand aero engineer and his son is an aero engine fitter.  Eric died on 21 August 1989 at age of 94 and was living at 3 Brackenbury Gardens.  Eric’s son, Cyril died in 1942 at the age of 21.
