Biography
Ernest Walter Clegg was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestshire in 1889, the son of John and Elizabeth (nee Southwell). In 1891, Ernest was living with his parents and four siblings at 79 High Street, Bromsgrove and his father was a tea dealer. Ernest was one of eight children and the family continued to live at 79 High Street. In 1911, Ernest (21) worked for Worcester Council as a school teacher and his father was by then a tea and hardware merchant.
Ernest enlisted with the Royal Flying Corps on 12 July 1916, at the age of 26 years 7 months and carried on the trade of motorcyclist as Air Mechanic 1. He served in France for the periods 28 July 1916 – 25 June 1917 and 26 October 1917 – 13 January 1919. He transferred to the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918, and served with 65 Squadron continuing as a motorcyclist. He was discharged on 30 April 1920 and awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals.
