Biography
Francis was born in Carlton, Nottinghamshire in 1883 to Samuel and Mary Duke. In 1901, he was living with his parents in Carlton and working as a plumbers apprentice; his father was a stone mason.
Francis married Lottie Clark in Nottingham in 1904 and they had a son, Francis Arthur who was born in 1905.
In 1911, Francis was living at 79 Garfield Road, Nottingham with his in-laws, his wife Lottie and 5 year old son Francis Arthur. He was a plumber and his wife was a blouse folder (his father-in-law was a Leavers lace maker (machine made lace).
Francis served as a Sapper and a Corporal with the 62nd West Riding Division Royal Engineers. He was stationed at Somerleyton Park, Lowestoft when he passed through Peterborough’s East Station on 15 October 1916. The only military record found for Francis was the Medal Roll which states that he was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals.
Francis died in Nottingham in 1928, aged 43.
