Biography
Francis Joe Davies was born in Glossop, Derbyshire around 1892, the son of John and Mary Ann Davies. In 1901 Francis was living at 8 Yorkshire Street, Glossop, Derbyshire with his widowed mother, Mary Ann (48) and four siblings, John T (17), Mary E (15), William (14) all working in the cotton mill, and Ellen W (3).
Private Davies enlisted in Bury, Lancashire. He served in the Monmouthshire Regiment, Lancashire Fusiliers and Welsh Regiment. He was killed in action in Belgium on 8 September 1917 aged 25 whilst serving with the 15th Battalion of the Welsh Regiment. He was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medal and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
