Biography

Private Fred James passed through Peterborough East Station on 23 September 1916 and wrote “I am very pleased to give thanks to the ladies of the G.E.R Soldiers and Sailors Rest”.  He signed himself as being with the ‘Girkers’, one assumes he means the Gurkhas.  We have found many British soldiers serving with Gurkha Battalions but sadly not Fred James so far.

‘During the First World War (1914–18), more than 90,000 Gurkhas served in the Indian Army, suffering approximately 20,000 casualties, and receiving almost 2,000 gallantry awards. Gurkhas fought on the Western Front, Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine, Mesopotamia and on the North West Frontier’    http://bit.ly/2tHSwbV
