Biography

Gunner G P Van Rooyen was serving with the South African Heavy Artillery, stationed at Stowlangtoft Camp near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk when he passed through Peterborough East Station on 29 October 1916.  He signed the visitors’ book which reveals his name, rank and number and also stated that he was aged 20 and his height was 6′ 1/8″.  He also wrote the following verse:

“I see a hand you cannot see
Which becons me away
I hear a voice you cannot hear
Which says I must not stay”
