Biography

Private H Wakefield has evaded our searches so far and the only firm details come from his visitors’ book entry dated 3 July 1916.  He was serving with the 2/7 Battalion Territorial Force Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment, stationed at Henham Park Camp, Wangford, Suffolk.

The Regiment had been formed at Milnsbridge, West Yorkshire, so it is possible that Private Wakefield was a Yorkshireman.  Later in 1916, the battalion moved to Bedford before being mobilised for war in January 1917 and landing in France destined to be engaged in numerous battles on the Western Front.  The Regiment returned to Britain in June 1918, and Private Wakefield may have returned with them as no record of his death in action has been found.  http://www.1914-1918.net/dukes.htm
