Biography
Lance Corporal J Veitch passed through Peterborough East Station and signed the visitors’ book on 13 August 1916. We have been unable to trace any of his military records, but from his book entry we know that he was serving with the 2/8 Battalion Royal Scots Regiment, based at Rainsford End Camp, Chelmsford, Essex.
The 2/8 Battalion was raised at Haddington, East Lothian, less than 20 miles East of Edinburgh in September 1914. It is possible that L/Cpl Veitch came from this area but further identification has not been possible. In 1915, the regiment was based at Peebles and then Falkirk before moving south to Essex in February 1916. A year later the battalion were moved to Ireland where it was disbanded in the Summer of 1917. http://www.theroyalscots.co.uk/ww1-battalions/
