Biography

Gunner James Allen was with the City of Dundee Battery, 2/2nd Highland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery when he passed through Peterborough East Station on 7 September 2016.  We believe he may be from Scotland as he wrote the following in the visitors’ book:

“Scots wa hae we Wallace bled
Scots whom Bruce has often led
Welcome to his goury bed
Let him follow me.
Wha far Scotlands King and law
Freedoms sword wed strongly draw
Freemen stand or freemen fa
Let him turn and flee.
We sleekit cowrin tim’rous beastie
O’’ what a panic’s in thy breastie.
Rabie Burns.”

We have been unable to trace any military history for James.  Do you recognise the Rabie Burns verse as something your ancestor may have written?  If so, do get in touch as we would like to find out more about James.

The City of Dundee Battery, was a territorial unit of the Royal Field Artillery, part of the 2nd Highland Brigade. They had their HQ at Dudhope Drill Hall, Brown Street, Dundee.   http://bit.ly/2t1lgZN
