Biography
Private John Reid enlisted in June 1916 to the 2/6 Battalion Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders. He passed through Peterborough East Station and signed the visitors’ book on 29 October 1916 writing “Many thanks to the Ladies for their
kindness to me which I appreciated very much”. At the time, the battalion were based in Norwich.
His records reveal that he was called up on 10th November 1916, 13 days after he passed through Peterborough East Station. His first posting was with the 2/9 (The Dumbartonshire) Battalion, who were also in Norwich at the time.
John was discharged as permanently unfit for service with myalgia in May 1917, and was awarded the Silver War Badge; he was 36 years old.
Prior to enlistment John was a boot repairer in Glasgow. He married Ellen Melia in Rothwyre and they had two children, Peter and James, before 1916.
