Biography

Gunner William Mays was serving with the Royal Horse Artillery when he passed through Peterborough East Station on 1 November 1916.  He wrote in the visitors’ book Here’s Luck to us – all of us – may we never want noat, none of us – Likewise mysen’. “A Yorkshireman’s Toast”.

William’s service record has not been located but his medal card reveals that he was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals.  He served in France from 15 December 1914 and received the 1915 Star.

We have unable to locate William in Census records, but it is likely, from is entry in the visitors’ book, that he came from Yorkshire.
