Biography

Gunner William Jayes signed the visitors’ book at Peterborough East Station on 27 June 1916; he was probably on his way to or from Landguard Fort, Felixstowe, where he was stationed with the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA).  Several companies of the RGA were based there as part of the East Coast defences during the war.

At some point, William transferred to the Royal Engineers with whom he remained until the end of the war and his subsequent discharge.  He was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals, which suggests overseas service but the location is not known.

William’s service records could not be located and we know nothing more about him.
