Biography

Sergeant R Gibbins was serving with the 2nd/1st Lovat Scouts Highland Mounted Brigade when he passed through Peterborough East Station on 3 November 1916.  He wrote in the visitors’ book “Many thanks for all the kindness I received here, it was very very welcome in the early hours of 4 a m to get a refresher of lovely coffee which I am sure will be welcomed by all tommies again many thanks”.

No military records for Sergeant Gibbins could be located so nothing further is known.

“The 2/1st Lovat Scouts were formed  in September 1914 and remained at home throughout the war.  They were under orders of 2/1st Highland Mounted Brigade and moved to Norfolk in December 1915 and converted to a cyclist unit near Lowestoft in Spring 1916.  In November 1916 the 2/1st and 2/2nd Lovat’s Scouts formed the 1st (Lovat’s Scouts) Yeomanry Cyclist Regiment.”
