Biography
Driver Richard Painter was serving with D Sub Section of the Royal Field Artillery when he passed through Peterborough East Station and signed the visitors’ book on 7 September 1916. He was stationed at Cavalry Barracks, Norwich.
He wrote the following message: “hoping the Ladies at the Rest Room will accept my best thanks for the way in which I was treated here”. He also wrote “They who fight for freedom undertake the noblest cause mankind can ever have at stake.”
Richard’s service record has not survived, but from his medal card we know that he served overseas as he was awarded the British War and Allied Victory Medals.
