Biography
Robert John Crump was born in Pistyll, Caernarvonshire in December 1891 to parents Samuel Abner Randall and Catherine Ellin (nee Roberts). In 1901 Robert, aged 9, was living at 10 Sea View Terrace, Llithfaen, Pistyll, Pwllheli, Caernarvonshire, Wales with Samuel (37) a stone quarry labourer, Catherine (33), David (13), Annie (12) and William (4). In 1911, Robert (19) a blacksmith’s striker at a granite quarry and his brother David (23), a granite quarry miner are living at Mountain View, Port Nant, Llithfaen, Pistyll, Caernarvonshire, Wales with their Aunt Francess and Uncle Robert Roberts (42) and seven cousins.
We have been unable to find Robert’s service record, but we know from his medal record that he served with the Denbighshire Yeomanry and the Royal Engineers. He was awarded the British War and Allied Victory medals.
In October 1916 the 2/1st Denbighshire Yeomanry and the 2/1st Monmouthshire Yeomanry converted to form the 3rd (Denbigh & Montgomery) Yeomanry Cyclist Battalion. For more information about the Denbighshire Yeomanry, please see http://bit.ly/2EVp33K
Robert passed through Peterborough East Station on 24 February 1917 and wrote in the visitors’ book “very many thanks for the nice refreshments we have just received here”. He was serving with the 3rd Yeomanry Cyclists Regiment, stationed at the Drill Hall, Beccles, Suffolk and was with three other soldiers serving with the same regiment; Privates Evans, Jones and Williams.
Robert married Kate Ellen Hughes in 1919 at Ffestiniog, Merionethshire. They had one child, Robert Gwynedd Crump born in 1924 at Ffestiniog. Robert died in December 1924, age 33 years at Festiniog, Merionethshire. In 1939 his widow, Kate, was living at 7 Tanyrallet Terrace, Ffestiniog.
