Biography

Thomas Edgar was born in 1892 in Sudbury, Suffolk, the son of Robert and Emily Whatnell and was one of seven children. By 1911 the family were living in Cambridge, his father was a carpenter and joiner and Thomas was working as a printer.

Apart from serving in the Cambridgeshire Regiment, nothing further is known of Private Whatnell’s war service.

Thomas married Lillie Gissing in Cambridge in September 1915 and they lived at 60 Catherine Street, Cambridge. He died in Caxton in 1926.

His brother, George Henry Whatnell served in the Royal Engineers, he was married to Louisa Smith and had three children. A skilled cabinet-maker, who survived the war and his service record is available.
