George Turner passed through Peterborough East Station on 18 July 1916, with his naval colleague W Clayton.  It is presumed that they were both serving on HMS Otway although they appear to have mis-spelt the ship’s name which is odd.  The Otway was also at sea on patrol on the date both men came through Peterborough.

SS Otway was a British ocean liner owned by the Orient Line, built by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company of Glasgow, Scotland and launched in 1909.  She had five sister ships; Orsova, Osterley, Otranto, Orvieto, and Orama and they had fixed sailings every other week to Australia and New Zealand.  Otway was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and deployed as an armed merchant cruiser, she was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat SM UC-49 off the Hebrides on 23 July 1917 during World War I, with the loss of 10 lives.   http://bit.ly/2orJxFd

Our research found a George Francis Turner in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, he joined HMS Vernon Mining School in August 1917, which would fit with his ship being sunk the previous month.  The only other available information was that he was demobilised on 15 November 1919.

George Turner remains as untraced at present unless you can help with further information. Please get in touch if you can help.
