Biography

AW Clayton passed through Peterborough East Station on 18 July 1916, with his naval colleague George Turner.  They were both serving on HMS Otway.

SS Otway was a British ocean liner owned by the Orient Line, built by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company of Glasgow, Scotland and launched in 1909.  She had five sister ships; Orsova, Osterley, Otranto, Orvieto, and Orama and they had fixed sailings every other week to Australia and New Zealand.  Otway was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and deployed as an armed merchant cruiser, she was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat SM UC-49 off the Hebrides on 23 July 1917 during World War I, with the loss of 10 lives.  http://bit.ly/2orJxFd
