Biography
Private W Whittam was serving with the 711 Company of the Motor Transport Army Service Corps and attached to the Heavy Section Machine Gun Corps when he passed through Peterborough East Station on 29 September 1916. He was travelling with his comrade Private Charles Palmer Wagner and they were stationed at Thetford, Norfolk.
It appears that 711 Company of the Motor Transport Army Service Corps provided drivers for the first tanks that were being developed near Thetford by the Heavy Section Machine Gun Corps and then introduced into battle on the Somme just a couple of weeks before Private Whittam’s entry. 711 Company were disbanded in February 1917, and the men transferred into the Heavy Section Machine Gun Corps, the forerunner of the Tank Corps. http://bit.ly/2tt5Q1b
