Biography
Private William George Hill enlisted on 31 August 1914 into the 9th Battalion Suffolk Regiment and was posted to France on 27 July 1915.
He passed through Peterborough East Station on 2 November 1916 and wrote in the visitors’ book “The happiest moments of my life, were spent in the arms of another mans wife – My Mother. Many thanks to the owner of this book, for the drink of nice tea, while waiting for the train on my long journey.”
Private Hill was wounded and subsequently discharged from the army on 19 June 1917. He was awarded the 15 Star, British War and Victory Medals, and the Silver War Badge. William’s service record has not been located and no further information has been found.
